Tuesday, September 24
This morning after breakfast, we’re off to Asheville, SC. Arrive & Check in to our hotel for the next two nights, the Hampton Inn. This evening’s dinner at the Deerpark Restaurant is one you will remember for years to come. A Butler will greet our coach on arrival and explain the evening agenda. It is a casual relaxed night in an elegant setting that is not to be rushed but rather savored. The Deerpark is in a peaceful, natural setting with plenty of rustic charm and sweeping views of estate pastures. A wall of windows overlooks an interior courtyard where a Jazz Band sets the mood while the light of day twinkles less and less beyond the distant Blue Ridge providing a warm and wonderful moment for enjoyment after your meal. After dinner your group will be dispatched to the Mansion House for our Private Gilded Evening at the Biltmore Estate. Winding your way along the Approach Road, the Estate will suddenly appear as the sun sets beyond the mountains. The lights will twinkle in the autumn night and the Butler will open the entry doors for a Candlelight Tour of this 250 room home. As you stroll through you will find docents to describe the décor and history of things, and musicians who add yet another dimension to the enchantment. We have the Estate reserved exclusively for the evening, providing you an opportunity to experience The Mansion as the Vanderbilt’s may have during the Gilded Age.    (Breakfast/Dinner)
Wednesday, September 25
This morning, after breakfast, we’ll start with a historic tour of the Biltmore Estate & Gardens. Step into a world of beauty virtually unchanged for more than a century. The main house on the estate, is a Chatequesque-style mansion built by George Washington Vanderbilt II, between 1889 and 1895. It is the largest privately owned house in the United States, at 178,926 square feet of floor space and is still owned by George Vanderbilt’s descendants, standing today as one of the most prominent remaining examples of the “Gilded Age.” After touring the house, you will have time to visit the gardens, stroll acres of formal and informal gardens designed by America’s foremost landscape architect, Frederick Law Olmsted. From the beauty of the Italian Garden to the breathtaking trees in America’s first managed forest, to the Rose Garden with more than 250 varieties. Then visit the Biltmore Winery where you delight in free wine tastings and a redesigned self-guided tour to learn how to make award-winning wines. You also have time to browse & Shop Antler Hill Village. Stepping into the everyday lives of families who lived on the estate raising livestock, tending crops and working at Biltmore Dairy in the 1890s. The Barn in Antler Hill Village – once the social and work center for these families – is alive again with blacksmiths, woodworkers, and other craft demonstrations. The Barn Door features a unique selection of American made arts and crafts items and a Smokehouse offering Carolina barbeque, quick sandwiches, and other Southern favorites.
Another private event awaits tonight, it’s a fashionable Evening with Zelda Fitzgerald, the wife of author F. Scott Fitzgerald. Known for her beauty and high spirits, she is an icon of the Roaring 20’s, a time of social and political change. In this era women won the right to vote. They began to exercise newfound freedoms, smoking in public, dressing dangerously in short skirts, drinking and dancing to the new Jazz Music; and Zelda led the way. She was dubbed by her husband to be “the first American Flapper.” She was the inspiration for the character of Daisy in her husband’s novel “The Great Gatsby” and we use that character to bring whim and frolic to the night. Zelda will meet us on arrival and pose for photos, a Jazz Band will be playing and champagne flows freely during the reception. A cash bar continues. Dinner is a nicely prepared Cordon Bleu with traditional accompaniments of salad and dessert. Entertainment follows through the night and dancers will cavort with guests in the subdued light of our ballroom. There will be lessons on how to dance The Charleston and The Lindy. As the evening draws to an end we’ll be a part of a Flapper & Gangster Costume Competition with prizes in several categories. We encourage patrons to dress in the period clothing.   (Breakfast/Dinner)
